IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is North America's premier sports car racing series, tracing its lineage to the 1971 IMSA GT Championship. The modern format blends sprint and endurance racing across 11 rounds, anchored by the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
History
IMSA's roots lie in the International Motor Sports Association founded by John Bishop in 1969, running everything from tube-framed sportscars to stock cars on road courses. The modern WeatherTech era began in 2014 with the merger of the American Le Mans Series and Rolex Sports Car Series. The GTP class (Grand Touring Prototype), introduced in 2023, brought factory-backed Hypercar-derived prototypes from Acura, BMW, Cadillac, Porsche, and Aston Martin to American soil for the first time in decades. The 2026 season is the 56th IMSA-sanctioned championship, featuring 45 full-season entries across GTP, LMP2, LMP3, and GTD Pro/GTD classes.
